JOHN McDOUALL STUART
AN UNSUNG HERO
July 20th - Aug 12th
Artist, Auguste Blackman has always been an admirer of the intrepid and tenacious explorer John McDouall Stuart described as Australia's greatest inland explorer.
Historian Earnest Favenc wrote "Stuarts victory was all his own; he had followed in other persons footsteps,he had crossed the true centre, and he had made the coast at a point much further north than his rivals"
John McDouall Stuart and his companions completed the first crossing of Australia from Adeliade to Van Diemens Gulf in 1882. This year we celebrate the 150th anniversary of this remarkable achievement.
