In the 1960s and 70s at Yirrkala a groundbreaking change took place.  A few senior lawmen taught their daughters how to paint sacred imagery. This dramatic innovation changed the face of Indigenous art.

Now 50 years on it is time to celebrate the women painters who are the current stars of the Yirrkala stable. Many of these artists are represented by separate galleries and only have solo shows these days so it is rare for them to be seen side by side. Some of them are part of the new wave of female artists who are still emerging.
